The specific way polling failed here is annoying, yes, but the result was a coalition much closer to the rest of the country that makes me feel like this is a repeatable result instead of a fluke driven by an intensely charismatic candidate outshining a fumbling moderate.
my strong prior about michigan btw is that the vast majority of primary voters were actually happy to vote for either candidate in the general and will consolidate quite easily behind el-sayed just like they are coalescing behind talarico in texas online freakouts are not real life
A lot of very horrible people are learning that Black voters and affluent suburban voters are not their Emotional Support Electorate(TM) but real humans with real agency and their own political priorities and concerns and they are going to lash out in incredibly nasty ways.
I think the most disturbing political discourse I've seen is white people talking about Black voters as if they're some kind of maternal/paternal figure who's going to come in and discipline the unruly young kids who have the audacity to mess with (democratic) socialism. Just, yikes. Yikes on bikes.

I’m telling you this as a political scientist. The person who is electable is the one who is elected. This can and does change over time. Any and all speculation about “electability” is either puffery or anxiety and is often both.

The entire Republican Party, and a chunk of the Democratic Party, have a direct interest in convincing you that conservative wins are a mandate and anything else is not.
the worst strategic mistakes of everyone in the party for the last several years pretty much all come down to a delusion that the overwhelming majority of the party is with them and that their opponents are just annoying people on twitter
I mean, they can’t reevaluate, right? The amount of things they’ve gotten wrong would just be overwhelming. Their minds would turn into some sort of eldritch Lovecraftian horror. Much easier to just double down and never think about it.

It can be simultaneously true that things have largely gotten better, especially for the middle class, and that people in the bottom rungs are forced to make suboptimal tradeoffs because they can't pay the entry fee - eg the worse unit economics of dollar stores. This isn't some bullshit myth.
I think the evidence is bad vibes about the national leadership aren't going to stop Democratic turnout going brr this year. But my guess is they're going to have to put up points on the board fast once they have real power, or the Democratic Tea Party thing is going to go into overdrive.
one of the reasons I think this current leftist insurgency is the Dems Tea Party moment is that this kind of pleading and scrabbling for the moral high ground and wishcasting that not all is lost is *incredibly* familiar.

Starting to think some of you need to go work in an office and play some ice breaker games so you can learn how to deal with people who are not strongly invested in politics and barely believe anything.
May be wrong here, but my sense is there is a whole media apparatus that aggressively screens Dem candidates and cautions voters not to support the more left-wing candidate. And this is asymmetric. Credible media messengers don't police right-wing candidates the same way.

A lot of people on here remain bitter about the version of Uncommitted they made up in their heads while high profile members of the actual Uncommitted are becoming mayors, state senators, members of Congress and maybe even part of the US Senate. In some cases, with establishment support.
