So apparently that HWA pro-AI newsletter also uses Indigenous water rights issues as a prop, trivializing the activism by Indigenous peoples to protect our water including specific anti-data centre actions. I guess they figured why not alienate Indigenous horror writers while they’re at it?

“Sure. Sure.

Yes, we know AI is using up resources. So does driving a car or a planes so does building a new home. So do a lot of things. Humans have always used up Earth’s resources and usually not nicely. There are reservations and other Indigenous communities in Canada that have never had clean water and have been ravaged by pipeline construction. But somehow that’s been okay for the past fifty or a hundred years, and very few people scream about that. But suddenly, AI is the enemy, not everything else we’ve been doing all along. Suddenly YOUR water might not be clean, so it’s a Big Deal”.

So why is it that with Long Covid 7 years on we still have this dismissal agenda despite a massive amount of scientific evidence? We really ought to study this sociological phenomenon more closely. That’s what we need more evidence on, not the existence of LC.

Bluesky is a "liberal bubble" because fascist chuds can't get traction without algorithmic assistance and because people here trained themselves to block "debate me" trybois the instant they roll up

Bluesky's new CEO Toni Schneider on the platform's reputation for being a liberal bubble: "Yes, we definitely want that to change. It is already changing. It certainly wasn’t designed to attract one specific group of people."

I was talking to a friend and realized that a lot of people don't know that officially Karen Carpenter died because of side effects of re-feeding. They fed her so aggressively that it damaged her heart. It's 2026 so the re-feeding process is at least in theory better but anorexia has a long tail.

If you own a $10 million home in NYC and have taxable income of $2 million/ year, you have two choices: Claim NYC residency and pay no pied- a- terre tax, but pay $76,617 in NYC resident income taxes. Claim non-residency and pay $0 in income taxes but pay $80,000 in pied- a- terre tax.

Amnesty's capitulation is unacceptable, because a human rights NGO is not simply a discount think tank (viz. a double discounted research university). It's part of its job description to specifically leverage its resources to stand its ground against actual and threatened SLAPPs from bad actors!

In more seriousness, I would truly appreciate your vote. I feel awkward being this blunt about it, but I love this series, and I feel like it's exactly the sort of work the category was meant to reward--long and meaty and complicated, but not self-contained enough for stand-alone nominations.

As we enter the last week of Hugo voting, a reminder that October Daye is up for Best Series, and winning would be made SO MUCH SWEETER by the fact that I could take my trophy and inform the room "I'm going to Disneyland," then ACTUALLY DO IT, since Disneyland will be less than a mile away. WOW!

It’s entirely uncontroversial & evidence-based to state that needle-syringe exchange programs (NSP) & opioid agonist treatment (OAP) reduce illness & death & improve mental health & social outcomes in people who inject drugs (PWID) Sadly, only 5 countries provide high coverage of both NSP & OAT 1/2

It was inevitable that reactionary centrists would turn against harm reduction and call for a return to mass incarceration

So sometimes when I see particularly haunted stuff on Thrift Store websites, I bid the minimum just to see. Can I really purchase the horrors for as little as $4.99? This week, the answer is yes.

A ball jar with a well-worn label for Wallace berries something presents pickled people ( part of it is illegible) A little hand carved figure of a squatting man gives you a blank-eyed stare from inside the jar. He is immersed in some kind of clear liquid

Great article, and also fuck this shit. Imagine thinking that "sure, one option to upending your life to take a test we could not administer is that you should just take the bar exam in February" is a remotely reasonable remedy.

I work w/building safety codes daily, & I'm starting to get annoyed when post-apoc media makes buildings decay inaccurately. Or worse, make the post-apoc additions require complex machines or materials. I'm not proud of it, but I *do* know what wind shear damage looks like. (Not like *that*.)

working late and i’ve got some old star trek on as white noise and never don’t laugh when worf just gets an “im not mad, i’m just disappointed” and a write-up from starfleet for assassinating one of the candidates for president of Qo’noS.

If this website were even 1/1000th the woke antifa mob I was promised we'd be having a months-long, Odyssey-level crashout about Olivia Rodrigo dating a random private equity guy.
