Trump doesn’t force people to do bad things. All he did was show people they could get away with being horrible if they really wanted to, and a lot of powerful people decided they didn’t need to pretend anymore. Especially those in influential positions who could push back but did not.

I think Schumer's inability to convince viable candidates to run against Platner -- candidates who met the moment -- reflects poorly on his leadership. After all, Mills -- an unpopular sitting governor -- lost by 50 points.

i'll take a stab at translating this: one of the theorized risks of an outsider movement is that you get more Badly Vetted Candidates, but this year we've had two real huge blowups and one of them was a decade-plus officeholder, so it's not just an outsider thing

I’ve avoided a lot of the Platner discourse because it’s a toxic tarpit, but I think the notion that the lesson here is primarily about either one political faction or something essential about “unvetted” newcomers, sits in some considerable tension with the entire Eric Swalwell experience.

The Platner mess has exposed a very specific sub-tendency on the American socialist left: urbanites whose politics are defined by their hatred of their liberal neighbors, and channel that distaste into a condescending fetishization of rural/working-class male identity

one side's voters care about sexual assault and one side's voters don't and while I understand that "impossible to say whether this is good or bad" is the standard for the paper of record I think it's clear which side has the moral high ground here
